Why pay top dollar for a new laptop when you could purchase a refurbished Dell laptop or ThinkPad for much less? Daniel Dorin Bucur asked himself this question in the beginning of 2005. A few months later, he launched Portafixe.com, an online retailer of used laptops, notebooks and tablet PCs.
Based in Montreal, Canada, Portafixe refurbishes and resells laptops and other portable computers from popular suppliers such as Dell, HP, Panasonic and Toshiba. The Lenovo ThinkPad is a top seller, and the company also specializes in hard-to-find older machines.
Portafixe serves an international client base, currently shipping used, refurbished laptops, notebooks and tablet PCs to all Canadian provinces, the United States and Western Europe.
A thriving computer resale business -- walk in or order online
Selling refurbished, business model computer equipment has worked out well for Portafixe, says web developer Marc-Andre Caron. The website gets an average of 1,000 unique visitors per day, and the company ships more than 300 refurbished laptops, notebooks and tablet PCs per month.
The company warehouse in Montreal, Canada, also serves as a retail storefront. The warehouse, which employs six people, is a popular destination for Montreal students on the lookout for a reliable and cheap alternative to purchasing a new Dell laptop or ThinkPad.
Walk-in business is so good that the company is expanding, with plans to open another warehouse and storefront in Toronto in September 2009. Whereas Montreal is a hub for students, boasting six universities and twelve junior colleges, Toronto is known as a business town. The new storefront will make it even easier for Portafixe to serve its large client base of local business owners and employees, says Mr. Caron.

Portafixe purchases laptops, notebooks and tablet PCs from leasing companies that rent computer equipment to corporations and government agencies. Portafixe buys big lots of equipment returned after the lease term is up. Purchasing from leasing companies ensures that all equipment Portafixe buys is of high quality. It also gives Portafixe customers access to the portable computers that are most popular with business users.
Portafixe technicians visually inspect, clean and test every used laptop, notebook and tablet PC. The company ships every machine with an operating system already installed, typically Windows. Purchasers may also request specific configurations or upgrades, such as more RAM or a larger hard drive.
